British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran considers his tour-mate Taylor Swift to be one his closest friends in America. "We've had very similar experiences," he said of their respective music careers and love lives when we chatted with him. "I texted her this morning [saying], 'I wrote this new song about this situation.'" Though he collaborated with Swift on their song "Everything Has Changed," the next person who he hopes to work with is actually her ex. "I've always been a massive fan of John Mayer," Sheeran revealed. "I think he's very talented."

He means no drama by this statement, of course. The artist proved he's polite—thanking those around him for their time or for getting him a bottle of water—when he sat down for our interview after his live set on the Today Show.

He was pleased to hear that more than 1,000 C.F. Martin & Co. LX1E Ed Sheeran Signature Edition guitars have been sold. The proceeds benefit East Anglia's Children's Hospices, a U.K.-based charity. He was visibly humbled by this number, his eyes widening with a smile. His ensemble—a black collared shirt and jeans—perfectly matched his laid-back, level-headed personality. "I like to be comfortable," he noted of his wardrobe choice.

He even believes that a hoodie and T-shirt clothing line may be in his future. "I wore a hoodie to the Olympics closing ceremony," he offered. "But it was a Ralph Lauren hoodie!"

But before he gets to that, he'll be releasing a new album in January. The contrast between his current album and the next? They're about different ladies. "Instead of writing songs for girls, I tend to write albums, which I guess is a bit weird," he said. We think the word sweet is more fitting. Read on to learn his thoughts on love, Twitter, tattoos, and more.

Kate Middleton is the Royal Patron for the EACH charity. What was it like to meet Princes William and Harry at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee?

It was a very random experience being in Buckingham Palace drinking tequila with my parents, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, and the Queen's family. It was really odd. Looking back on it, it's pretty insane. The whole day was really fun.

You are pretty popular on Twitter. Who do you follow, with entertaining tweets?

JME. He's very entertaining. [He tweets] random stuff. He took a picture of himself with a cow the other day. It was quite funny.

What's the most bizarre tweet you've received from a fan?

They're all pretty dirty to be honest!

You have several tattoos–a Lego head and a bottle of Heinz ketchup. Do you ever deviate from Heinz?

Heinz is the one! I got [the tattoos] all over the course of a year of touring, in different countries and different cities. It wasn't so much about what I was tattooing on my body. It was where, the time and place, and the memories. The ketchup one was in Columbus, Ohio, and it was the start of the tour, and I got that to symbolize it. Some of my tattoos are a bit silly, but I know where and what time I got them.

Do you have a favorite?

I've always liked the cat, Puss in Boots.

Yes, from the movie 'Shrek.' You have a song that notes you've seen it 12 times: the first movie or one of the other three?

Always the first one. I haven't really liked them since [that one].

What is your favorite fairytale and why?

I watch quite a lot of Disney movies, including The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Not that that's a fairytale, but that's a good one. The music! Pocahontas has a good soundtrack, as well [he starts singing "Colors of the Wind"].

Would you consider inking a woman's name on your body?

Well I've got "Your Name" tattooed. I have a song in which I say, I should ink my skin with "Your Name." So, no. I don't think I'd get a female's specific name tattooed on me.

What's the best love advice you've ever received?

My uncle always said, "Hurry slowly." I guess [it means] have the intensity of love but don't rush into it. Have the full feeling but take it slow. Ease into it.

The first song you learned on guitar was "Layla" by Eric Clapton. What would you say if you ever meet him?

I heard "Layla," and I was like, that's what I want to do. I want to learn that. I'd say, "You were the reason I started playing guitar." I don't know what he'd say to that!
